ouch my face (ouch YOUR face for not coming!)

I photographed Ouch My Face a couple of years ago at the Espy. I really liked the show - it was New Years eve and there were about 13 bands playing and they were one of the ones that stood out from the rest. It's not music I like really, but when it's done well, it's awesome.

It's a 3 piece, Ben Wundersitz, Steve Huf (last gig with the band) and Celeste Potter. They are fuckin screamy. And good! They played with 3 other bands, the first one I missed because I was on the wrong street looking for the venue - I'd like to blame drugs or Google Maps for this, but I think it may have been my fault.

Kids of Zoo were the first band I caught, pretty cool, nice and heavy, enjoyable.

Damn Terran were up next, also pretty good but there were extra points allowed for the good looking bass player, so... you know.

And Ouch My Face. A fuckin blast as always - no room for moving so I came away with about 200 photos from the same spot.

Awesomesauce.

Because I am just totally great and kind, and I like this band. I thought I'd chuck in a bonus video from Ouch My Face.

....

It was a bit of a late call up but I was off to The Corner Hotel to photograph 3 aussie bands for my Friday night... Calling All Cars are on tour promoting their new album, they bring with them Redcoats and Boy In A Box. I had photographed Redcoats before when they played with another favourite Melbourne band, [ME] and had always been keen on seeing these guys again. I hadn't heard of Boy In A Box, not really my thing and neither was Calling All Cars, but they were both great to photograph, which is the reason why I went....

Willie Nelson

You may remember I shot the Wagons at the Forum last month, you also may remember that I was one of three videographers too - finally we get to see if the footage was any good, and it looks pretty good to me!

Go (to the right venue) mez

So I went to the Palais Theatre in St Kilda here in Melbourne, expecting to find Gomez playing. All I found was a dark exterior and two drunk people equally as confused as me... We soon figured out that we were at the wrong venue and Gomez was in fact playing at the Palace in Melbourne CBD, I had thought of offering them a ride into the city but decided not to as I was pretty sure they wouldn't stop talking the whole way in - and I could tell from our brief encounter that it wasn't going to be interesting.

So anyway - I got to the PALACE in time to catch most the support band Leader Cheetah, I can't say I was really paying much attention to them as I was still angry at paying $10 for about 15minutes parking in St Kilda and having to high tail it to the city where I got to pay a further $9 but they received a warm reaction from the crowd.

Gomez appeared and it was all on - three songs - GO! it was over pretty quick and we were escorted from the photographers pit and out the back. Unlike The National, who escorted me from the building after my three songs we were allowed to stay for the gig. I caught maybe 5 songs, but thought that the one I wanted to hear was probably gona be an encore so I left...

just like that.

Dananadzdeathraysanananathegrowlananackroyd

Those who know me know that I am pretty hardcore. That's why I was photographing a gig on a Monday night while the rest of you were knitting doily's at home in front of the heater with a rug on your lap and slippers on.

the plural of ibis is NOT ibii

It was the 2nd time in 34 years that I have been impressed by a band from Perth, and they both had a touch of Tom Waits going on about them - The Growl were first up and I quite liked them, the place was almost empty so a lot of people missed out on that one. Suckers.

Next up were Dz Deathrays. A two piece from Brisbane. Fucking pretty good if you ask me. Kinda like.

um.

Dananananaykroyd must have snorted all the coke in Melbourne before coming on stage. Bouncing around on the stage, off the stage. On the stage.

Off the stage.

Anyway, apart from the left looking at the stage singers mic not working for a few songs, they were great. Come to think of it I could hardly hear either singer. But I had earplugs in which probably looks gay, but try getting to sleep with eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Wagons? Foreal

The Wagons have been on tour around Australia for the last couple of months and it all ended up in Melbourne at the Forum on Saturday night. I was with them in Tasmania when they kicked off the tour and it was cool to also be at the last show - the Forum in Melbourne being a little bit different to a pub in Launceston. I thought I'd be cool and take on the task of being one of three people taking video and also taking photos for The Dwarf, and it all seemed to turn out alright.

First band of the night was Teeth and Tongue - a band I had seen pop up a bit on the Dwarf emails (to photograph) but had not seen. A three-piece and a drum machine - the drum machine usually being the death knock for me, BUT NOT IN THIS CASE. That's right, it was good. I think the last time I saw a band with a drum machine was in Timaru over Christmas last year where I witnessed a butchering of Santeria by Sublime.

Second up was a great band called Puta Madre Brothers - also a three piece but they all played drums this time. All three were sat at the front of the stage - two guitar players and a bass player and they all had kick drums and symbols. One had some sort of mutated kick pedal that allowed him to hit a snare drum. Nice. I will be checking these guys out ASAP.

ASAP. What kind of wanker came up with that term.

Before the Wagons came on there was a guest spot by a band called the D3 who have a song called 'Henry Fucking Wagons'..

The Wagons are always good - we had a list of songs that we had to video and between I was shooting stills, making the most of the access all areas pass. There were a couple of guest spots (the guy who recorded them was playing some guitar, and a saw player). Everyone was treated to a great night with 3 fucking great bands!

See more here!

Georgia Fields reprise

Some pics that I finally got around to asking if I could post to flickr and my blog.

I photographed Georgia a while back when she played at the Thornbury Theatre here in Melbourne. It was a cool show and I got some great shots. She was quite impressed with them and one night asked if I'd be keen on a quick photo shoot for a upcoming tour. I went - she was sick, it was cold, I lost a lens but we got some nice shots :)
